About Us

Anchors Away Garden and Gifts opened it's doors in April of 2012.  It is a small seasonal business owned by Jessica and Patrick Markham.  We pride ourselves in being a conveniently open, offering quality plant material for sale at a fair price, and being a friendly local family-owned business.

Jessica holds a 2002 BS - Landscape Architecture Degree from University Wisconsin - Madison and is currently licensed in Wisconsin.  She grew up in Central Wisconsin helping on the family's Christmas tree farms and is a fourth generation business owner.   Her father and grandfather passed on a strong work ethic and patient horticultural skills.  Jessica combined these skills with love of art to pursue Landscape Architecture.  She has practiced in Minnesota and Illinois, in addition to Northeast Wisconsin, designing both residential and public projects ranging from $5k - $1.2 million in construction costs.  Noticing a market void, Jessica has hand selected new plant varieties to offer more consumer choice in Door County at competative prices.  She enjoys meeting new people in the greenhouse, potting up plants, and being outside doing just about anything active.

Patrick owns North Shore Marine Services.  It is a small mobile marine repair business based in Sturgeon Bay that started in 2007 serving Chicago north to Door County, Wisconsin.  Patrick is an avid sailor and has 16 years experience as a diesel engine technician.  He occassionally fills in helping at the greenhouse.  He loves cooking and is always happy to share with you grilling tips or recipes using many of our vegetable plants.

You may notice a few helpers periodically around our greenhouse.  Our daughter, 3, typically "helps" with limited watering, dead heading, and inventory arrangement and rearrangement.  Our son, 1, is still getting used to walking around the greenhouse, but he is great working the checkout and has a way with the ladies.  They have both learned at an early age that work and fun often overlap.

Anchors Away?

It's been a full year in business and I still get puzzled looks from both vendors and customers when when we say our full business name, Anchors Away Garden and Gifts.  I often get asked where the name comes from.  Well, it's a culmination of things.  1.) We are in the historic shipbuilding town of Sturgeon Bay.  2.) It describes a transition in my life from doing landscape contracting to expanding my horizons in horticulture and retail sales 3.) We are avid sailors.  4.) My husband's side has two generations of Navy men.  5.) It's fun, different, and hopefully memorable.

Fun Anchor Facts:

  • "Anchors Aweigh" is the fight song of the United States Naval Academy and was composed in 1906.
  • The phrase "anchor's aweigh'" means that the anchor is clear of the sea bottom and the ship is officially underway.
